How Roof Leaks Are Caused During Storms

If your roof springs a leak when it's storming outside, then you could find yourself wondering about the cause. Of course, there are various things that can cause roof leaks when there are periods of bad weather. These are some of the causes of roof leaks during storms.

Inability for Water to Drain Off of the Roof

Of course, your roof is designed to withstand some bad weather conditions. However, when too much rain stands on your roof, it might not be able to handle the pressure, and leaks can begin to form. There are a few things that can make it difficult for water to drain properly off of a roof.

For one thing, if your gutters are clogged with leaves or other debris or if they are damaged in some way, such as if they are bent, then the water cannot flow off of your roof and into your gutters as it should. This can cause it to stand on top of your roof and can eventually lead to leaks. If it rains really hard for long periods of time, then the water might end up standing on your roof and causing leaks anyway, even if your gutters are working as they are supposed to.

Damage from Flying Debris

Another thing that can cause roof damage -- and, therefore, roof leaks -- during a storm is flying debris. During serious storms, the wind can pick up and blow really hard. If this happens, then tree limbs and other debris can be thrown around your yard. This can cause your roof to be damaged. If the debris puts a hole in your roof, even if it's minor, then water could leak through this hole.

Damage from Wind

Wind doesn't just cause flying debris to blow around and potentially damage your roof. It can also cause damage to your roof all on its own. For example, it could rip the shingles off of the top of your house. Once some of your shingles are missing, then the top of your home does not have the protection that it's supposed to have. This can lead to leaks and other problems.

As you can probably see, there are various ways that your roof can be damaged and can start leaking during storms. If you stay on top of the maintenance of your roof and gutters, however, you can help ensure that its able to properly withstand more severe weather conditions without leaking.
